Canada has participated in international expositions since 1851 and has enjoyed success as both a participant and a host. Early exhibits featured furs, agricultural products and birch bark canoes. More modern, technologically-sophisticated exhibits have been immensely popular and met with repeated critical acclaim. Canada's pavilions at Brisbane (1988), Seville (1992), Taejon (1993) and Lisbon (1998) were among the top international pavilions. Some of you may recall that Canada hosted Expo 67 in Montréal, Québec and Expo 86 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Canada's participation in Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China will provide Canada with the opportunity to promote Canadian arts and culture and share with the world the Canadian model of openness, equality and respect for diversity.
