At each international exposition, participating nations are asked to develop a theme that is reflective of the overall theme and one or more of the sub-themes chosen by the host nation.
Canada’s theme for Expo 2010 is “The Living City: inclusive, sustainable, creative.” It is based on the overall theme of Expo 2010, “Better City, Better Life” and provides a clear focus for Canada’s participation. It was developed through research and cross-Canada face-to-face discussions with over 150 organizations and individuals from the private sector, industry associations, federal departments, provincial, territorial and municipal governments, ethno-cultural communities (including Chinese-Canadian leaders) as well as experts in urban studies, tourism, media and cultural industries.

“The Living City: inclusive, sustainable, creative” aims to demonstrate how Canada’s cities reflect Canadian history and showcase Canadian democratic values. Our cities are characterized by social inclusion, sustainability and creativity and are both living and liveable. They offer a high quality of life for residents and are hubs of cultural, social, economic and technological creativity. Recognized by the United Nations as offering exceptional quality of life, Canada’s cities provide innovative and sustainable urban development models and practices to share with the world.
The theme is built on three pillars:
Inclusive Cities: Canada’s Inclusive Cities are built on democratic self expression and participation. They reflect our multicultural diversity, respect the equality and rights of individuals, and are safe, tolerant communities.
Sustainable Cities: Canada’s Sustainable Cities strive to attain a balance between the needs of people and the environment, including the interdependence of rural and urban life.
Creative Cities: Our Creative Cities are modern hubs of innovation and creativity where talent and knowledge in technology, business, science and the arts interconnect.
