Canada in China

Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1970, Canada and China have developed interdependent relations based on trade, culture, development, immigration and other vital areas of international cooperation.

The Canadian and Chinese governments have agreed to double the level of economic exchanges between the two countries by 2010. Expo 2010 will provide an opportunity for Canada to strengthen partnerships with China in many key areas, such as culture, trade and investment and technology.

One of the many important agreements between the Government of Canada and the People’s Republic of China is the Cultural Cooperation Agreement signed in January 2005.  This cultural agreement was authored to promote further cultural partnerships and enhance the bonds of respect and understanding between the Canadian and Chinese cultures.

Chinese culture is deeply woven into the fabric of Canadian society and history. It is hoped that Canada’s participation in Expo 2010 in Shanghai will serve to enhance our relationship with China and foster new cultural partnerships.
